The highlight of our USA and Caribbean Family Trip was definitely our Road Trip USA! We spent 3.5 weeks driving around the Deep South, and it was awesome.
We were on a budget of US$180 and had no problems using this money to see the best that the Deep South had to offer us. We basically travelled from Miami to New Orleans, then New Orleans to Atlanta, then Atlanta to Miami stopping at many weird and wonderful places along the way.
This was a perfect trip to do with kids. It was so easy having our own car and going at our own pace. There are countless number of places to stop, so we never had to drive too far. Accommodation is plentiful and cheap and came standard with two double beds, so it was very easy for us to find a suitable room.
This was our itinerary:
24 – 27 Nov: Orlando, FL
27 Nov: Tampa and Clearwater,FL
28 Nov: Tallahassee, FL (Thanksgiving)
29 Nov: Mobile, AL
30 Nov – 3 Dec: New Orleans, LA
3 – 5 Dec: Jackson and Vicksburg, MS
5 Dec: Scottsboro, AL
6 Dec: Chattanooga, TN
7 Dec: Helen, GA
8 – 10 Dec: Atlanta, GA
10 Dec: Columbia, SC
11 – 13 Dec: Charleston, SC
13 Dec: Jacksonville, FL
14 Dec: St Augustine, FL
15 – 17 Dec: West Palm Beach, FL
17 Dec: Miami, FL
As you can tell from our itinerary, we were not taking our time. This road trip USA was often exhausting, but we were able to pack a lot into every day and had a great taste of what this region has to offer. Our main goal was to explore the Deep South and have a different view of the USA than what we had on previous trips. This we certainly achieved!
Our favourite places were New Orleans, Charleston and Chattanooga. We also loved St Augustine, Columbia and Vicksburg, and some of the random stops such as the Babyland General Hospital.
