Indonesia, Australia’s closest neighbour, is a fantastic place to visit. From the popular beaches of Bali to the tropical paradise of the Gili Islands, the volcanoes of Lombok to the big cities of Java, there are so many different places and attractions to visit – and I haven’t even mentioned the majority of islands!
You can read all about our experiences and our top Indonesia travel guides in this Indonesia travel blog section of our site.
Indonesia is a fascinating place to visit with so many different cultures and islands that can differ a lot from one another. The country has over 13,000 islands! So you are sure to find one that suits you :)
Bali is where most tourists head in Indonesia and for good reason. There is much to love about this beautiful island from the people, to the culture to the beaches to many interesting attractions. We have been to Bali 5 times and I don’t see us stopping!
In our travel blog Bali, you can learn all about our experiences travelling here alone, while pregnant and now with a family.
If you are planning your own trip to Bali, start with Bali with kids – our complete guide to a family holiday in Bali.
Sunset on Legian Beach, Bali
Bali is a fabulous destination for everyone, whether you are solo, a couple or a family. Our kids loved Bali, especially places like Waterbom water park and some of the fabulous accommodation options. I don’t think there is anywhere else on earth where fabulous private pool villas are so cheap!
The food is also plentiful, delicious and cheap. There are some great beaches and many varied attractions.

If you are Australian and have heard bad things about Bali – don’t believe them! Bali often gets the reputation in my country of being a destination only for bogans. This is not true and there is so much more to Bali than Kuta! You can read my article about why Bali isn’t just for bogans here.
In our Bali holiday blog, we have many articles to help you plan your own trip. You can see all our Bali travel blogs below or skip to the main ones here:
Don’t just read about our Bali trip blog – there is plenty more to Indonesia!
An ultra quick plane ride or fast ferry ride from Bali is the beautiful island of Lombok. We love this island!

People talk about it being how Bali was 50 years ago. I don’t know about that, but I do know it is a stunningly beautiful island and, while it is becoming increasingly popular, it isn’t overrun with tourists, like parts of Bali. It’s easy to feel like you have got away from it all here and we love it.
In our Lombok trip blog, you can read:
In addition to our travels in Bali and Lombok, we have also visited the main Indonesian island of Java. This is where you will find the majority of the Indonesian population including the mega city capital of Jakarta.

We look forward to visiting more of Indonesia soon!
We have visited the majority of places listed above with our kids aged from 2-5 on our various trips. We have found Indonesia an excellent place to visit with kids – especially in the main areas.
Many parts of Bali are filled with travelling families. I am not sure I have seen so many anywhere else, so you definitely won’t feel alone. Locals are very welcoming of kids everywhere we went in Indonesia and we had no problems travelling Indonesia with kids.

Finding baby products and food for even fussy eaters is very easy in the more touristy parts of Indonesia and big cities. If you are going off the beaten track, then I suggest taking what you need.
Private transfers are generally cheap for getting around main destinations, for example within Bali. This makes it very easy to get around those parts of Indonesia with kids.
There is a huge variety of accommodation types and many cater very well for families, especially in Bali. We have especially loved staying in private pool villas in Bali – so blissful!

We tried out local doctors in Bali, Lombok and Surabaya and all were fine!
My only complaint about travelling around Indonesia with kids is that travel does sound to be hard going off the main islands which is why we have avoided them so far. We like to keep things simple while our kids are young.
There is some fabulous accommodation in Indonesia – here are the places we have stayed that we have particularly enjoyed!
